Fukushima Workers Removing Tanks Receive High Radiation Exposures

Workers dismantling bolt together tanks at Fukushima Daiichi received high radiation doses to the eye during their work. TEPCO did not announce this finding, reporter Mako Oshidori questioned TEPCO officials at a recent press conference and obtained the admission.

This began as an inquiry about workers found on a recent report to have over 75 mSv equivalent dose to their eye lens. This is a serious concern asradiation exposure to the eye can cause cataracts. TEPCO initially didn’t say who the workers were with these high eye exposures. They admitted at the press conference that these workers were doing manual dis-assembly work on the H1 and H2 bolt together tanks. These tanks held highly radioactive sludge from the water decontamination processes. There were concerns these workers could receive high radiation exposures when this work was initially planned.

The final cutting and disposal of these tanks is done remotely but portions of the actual dis-assembly work still had to be done by hand.
